The Legacy of Lacquer Pigskin Boxes

In ancient China, many travelers carried their worldly possessions with them in lacquer pigskin boxes. When they went to sleep at night, they would use the box as a neck pillow.

Original pieces from the Ming and Ching dynasty (14th to late 19th century) no longer exist because they fell apart after many years of uses. They were never considered to be collectible pieces of art; instead they were a utilitarian item used in every day life.

Our collection now includes a number of very durable, lightweight reproductions manufactured in Northern China during the past 40 years. With curved top domes and hand-stitched seams, these boxes feature beautiful, hand-painted designs of birds, flowers and dragons. Lacquer is applied inside and out to protect the surfaces from moisture.

These boxes are beautiful on an end table or shelf and provide a safe haven for your papers.
