Sandalwood Palace Fans

On one of his many buying trips to China, Dominic Tang visited some longtime business friends in Suzhou, near Shanghai who had located a few sandalwood palace fans made in the 1970s. Dominic was amazed by there near perfect condition and intricately detailed carving.

These fabulous palace fans measure 11” wide by 19 1/2” tall. The carved out sandalwood center portion is hand-painted with a sepia-tone motif. Designs on the front and back are different. The inner and outer frames and handle are carved from zitan, an exotic and extinct wood that was only for the royal class. The zitan is carved into a faux bamboo design to symbolize long life. There are also fans inlaid with sterling silver motif designs and tiny round semi-precious stones.

The fans are fitted with a custom rosewood stand so their beauty can be truly appreciated. The outside shadow box has a zitan wood frame and glass sides. Originally given to emperors and empresses as birthday gifts, they will make a beautiful addition to your personal collection of Chinese treasures.
