Iconography Most Often Used in Chinese Art

Here’s a guide to the symbolism of various items frequently used in Chinese art:

Bat. The Chinese word for bat is “fu,” which is a homophone of the word that means “good fortune.” The bat is thought to bring good fortune, happiness and longevity. Two bats symbolize double happiness. Five bats symbolize the five wishes - health, wealth, long life, many sons and a natural death.

Crane. Longevity and wisdom.

Deer.  Longevity, riches, success.

Fish.  Abundance, conjugal felicity. Because it swims upstream, a carp is the symbol of perseverance and success.

Phoenix. The Empress (brides on their wedding day are compared to the empress). Prosperity, peace.

Shou. The character for “longevity” is featured in many decorative forms.
