Dear Friends and Supporters,

We have some very exciting news for you:  Award-winning filmmaker Arthur Dong is re-releasing Forbidden City, USA in DVD format, which coincides with the Broadway opening of Flower Drum Song in October.  The DVD will have never-before-seen footage, additional interviews, and a collection of memorabilia not in the original 1989 film which documents Chinese American nightclub entertainers of the 1930s and 40s.

Since Arthur is an alumnus of San Francisco State University, the departments of Asian American Studies and Cinema are especially proud to help launch the DVD release of Forbidden City, USA at McKenna Theatre, to an audience of 700, on November 9, 2002 (Saturday), 6:30-10:30 p.m.  We will screen the documentary and the extra DVD footage with Arthur, and then have a Q&A session with the Forbidden City performers as well as some live dancing and singing on stage by the performers.  All of this will be followed by a reception and a silent auction of items related to Forbidden City and Arthur’s films.  To date, we will have thirteen of the original Forbidden City performers attending.  Ben Fong-Torres, another SFSU alumnus, will be the evening’s emcee.

This special DVD launch party will be a benefit for the students of Asian American Studies.  The bulk of the money raised will be for their graduation.  We are currently outreaching to you, as an alumnus/alumna, who have benefited from an education at SFSU, or as an individual, corporation, or community organization, who have benefited from the work and service that Arthur, Ben, and all our students have provided.  Enclosed is an RSVP form with which you can show your support by becoming a sponsor of this event.
